14. Superman III

Superman Movies
Warner Bros.

Christopher Reeve’s third outing wasn’t that great either.

Superman III represents the diversion of the series from a serious comic book adaptation to a campy, slapstick comedy. The opening scene demonstrates this completely as it is literally a slapstick comedy set piece complete with a man falling down a hole. It’s really strange.

The story isn’t that much better either, with the plot revolving around the star of the film (nope not Superman), Richard Pryor’s tech expert August Gorman. The film focuses on computers/cyborgs as well as a knock off Lex Luthor called Ross Webster. The film lacks cohesion, whereas the first two films were very streamlined and focused stories.

The one saving grace of this film is a particular scene in which Superman confronts himself. By that I mean an evil version of Superman has a throw-down with Clark Kent, both portrayed by Reeve. This scene is actually very well done, but it doesn’t save the film from superhero movie mediocrity.
