Every M. Night Shyamalan Plot Twist Ranked From Worst To Best
1. The Sixth Sense - Malcolm Was A Ghost All Along
Plot: A psychologist named Malcolm (Bruce Willis) tries to help a child, Cole (Haley Joel Osment), who can see ghosts.
Here it is: Shyamalan's greatest ever twist and it's unlikely to be topped either.
Logic issues be damned, this is an absolutely stunning film ending and which works on numerous levels. Firstly, it's a completely shocking reveal that very few could've seen coming on a first viewing (assuming it hasn't spoiled by the internet, of course).
Secondly, it cleverly reframes the entire story. Rather than a film about Malcolm helping Cole to overcome his troubles, it was also a story about Cole helping a ghost, who didn't realize he was dead, complete his business on earth.
And most importantly of all, it brings the story to a deeply moving and excellently written conclusion as Malcolm says goodbye to his wife and is finally able to move on.
Since this ending so cleverly combines a shocking rug-pull with heartfelt storytelling that concludes Malcolm's story in exactly the right way, this twist fully lives up to the hype and showcases the best writing of M. Night Shyamalan's career.
