Every MCU Director Ranked Worst To Best

2. James Gunn

Thor Ragnarok Taika Waititi
Marvel Studios

Directed:

Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017).

James Gunn has recently been fired from the MCU after some old tweets (read at your own risk, they're NSFW) resurfaced. Whether or not this sacking is deserved, Gunn's departure is unfortunate since he did a great job with Guardians of the Galaxy and its equally awesome sequel.

Like many of the best MCU directors Gunn gave his films a real artistic identity. Full of colorful, quirky and borderline hallucinogenic visuals, crazy cinematography and imaginative production design, the GOTG films are by far the most visually stunning MCU films to date. In particular, with scenes such as the incredible funeral ending, GOTG 2 was a visual artwork. Gunn was also a great director of action and delivered some incredible set-pieces.

The peak of his directing was the one-take opening of the second film, which was a perfect superhero movie scene if there ever was one. Gunn said he wanted to make one of the best movie opening scenes ever. He legitimately did.

Recent events have perhaps marred his reputation, but they won't affect his MCU legacy.
