9. Ant-Man

Ant Man Scott Lang
Marvel Studios

After years in development hell and the notorious "creative differences" that saw Edgar Wright leave the project and Peyton Reed step in, it's a wonder Ant-Man was even remotely good. That it is one of Marvel's funniest, most human releases is astonishing.

Strengths

Paul Rudd's casting as Scott Lang is almost as perfect as Rbert Downey Jr's in Iron Man, which is almost unthinkable in hindsight. When he was cast as a criminal, cobat-ready superhero, it's safe to say eyebrows were raised, but Rudd has charisma pouring out of him and he sells the film's heart perfectly.

He's hilarious, irresistibly likeable, and his transformation from pudgey comic sidekick to martial artist capable of kicking an actual Avenger's backside (well, Falcon, but it counts) is stunning. Michael Pena is also hilarious as his comedy sidekick, and while Corey Stoll got some grief for being another generic Marvel villain he's a malignant enough presence to balance Rudd.

The casting of Michael Douglas and Evangeline Lily were also good, and while they were given significantly less space to blossom, hopefully the sequel will address that.

Weaknesses

Is it a little bit racist? Pena's Luis has been accused of stereotyping, which might be a little unfair, but TI's Dave and David Dastmalchian's Kurt are definitely a bit too cliched. Also, Stoll's motivation to become Yellowjacket and erase Hank Pym from history is admittedly a little undeserved.
