3. Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)
On paper, Captain America isn't as exciting a character as the likes of Iron Man or Thor, but he certainly has the most complex and tragic backstory.
In the Captain's first sequel, the altruistic super soldier learns his sacrifice during the Second World War wasn't enough to stop Hydra from thriving, and that his best friend Bucky Barnes also survived the conflict and has been turned into a seemingly unstoppable assassin known as The Winter Soldier.
Watching like a classic conspiracy spy thriller from the 1970s, the film finds Captain America and Black Widow attempting to bring an end to Hydra's reign of terror from the inside, whilst their pasts threaten to destroy them both.
Relentless in both action and intensity, The Winter Soldier sports truly phenomenal action sequences and a wickedly unexpected finale, and stands tall as a timeless fan favourite of Marvel's impressive back catalogue.
