Every Philip Seymour Hoffman Movie Ranked Worst To Best

44. Gary - When A Man Loves A Woman (1994)

One of the most frequent traits of Hoffman's best characters - like art tragically imitating life - was their addictions. In When a Man Loves a Woman, he plays recovering alcoholic Gary, who forms a bond with Alice (Meg Ryan) and puts a strain on her and her husband's (Andy Garcia) relationship.

Hoffman here is the very definition of a supporting player, adding emotion to the film's heavy-handed themes and showing off just how big a star he was destined to become, but the movie itself - whilst impeccably acted by Ryan and Garcia - isn't quite as arresting as it should be.
