Every Spike Lee Movie Ranked Worst To Best

5. She's Gotta Have It (1986)

Do The Right Thing
Island Pictures

Made on an impressively tight shoestring budget and shot in only two weeks, Spike Lee's classic debut She's Gotta Have It helped usher in the indie movie boom of the 80s and 90s, and remains one of the director's best films.

A black-and-white comedy which follows a woman (Tracy Camilla Johns) who refuses to conform to a monogamous relationship and dates three men (Lee, Tommy Hicks, John Terrell) at once, despite the objections of the men and society's views at the time.

As funny as it is empowering, wonderfully unpredictable and strikingly original, Lee's debut is a whip-smart social comedy, an affecting romcom and a successful indie flick all at once, and watching it you can see a director destined for bigger and better things.
