Every Spike Lee Movie Ranked Worst To Best
4. Crooklyn (1994)
Another slice-of-life drama set in a close-knit neighbourhood of Brooklyn, New York, Crooklyn is Spike Lee's most personal film, a semi-autobiographical passion project written alongside his siblings Joie and Cinqué Lee.
At the film's centre stands Troy (Zelda Harris), a young girl who learns a series of complicated and difficult life lessons from her trouble-making but loving brothers, her strong-willed mother (Alfre Woodard), and her sensitive but flawed father (Delroy Lindo).
Through Troy, Lee gives the audience a striking and fierce look at a community and a family afflicted by racism, classism and economic hardship, and although the film is both emotionally devastating and shockingly twisting, it's thanks to Harris' impressively mature performance that the whole thing is still hopeful, optimistic and kind.
Crooklyn is an undisputable masterclass, and Lee's portrayal of the Carmichael family is certainly one of his most rewarding accomplishments.
