3. Mulan

Though to contemporary audiences Mulan's feminist tone and representation of Chinese culture might seem rather mild, back in 1998 it sure was a big deal, all the more so as the film turned out a solid critical and commercial success.

Niki Caro (Whale Rider) has been selected to helm the remake, with Liu Yifei playing Mulan, while the likes of Gong Li, Donnie Yen and Jet Li will play supporting roles.

The script has been co-written by Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver (the new Planet of the Apes trilogy), which is a pretty solid endorsement in of itself.

As long as it's more respectful and representative of its culture than the original movie, it's easy to have faith in this being perhaps the most distinctive of all the upcoming Disney remakes.

Mulan releases on March 27, 2020.
