Fantastic Beasts: Ranking Every Character From Worst To Best

15. Modesty Barebone

The brilliantly named Modesty Barebone does everything she's asked for in the film, but she's rathe saddled by the fact that she's not supposed to be considered a fully fleshed-out character. That much is necessary because the whole point of the film's big twist is that we're supposed to initially believe that she is the Obscurial, and adding any detail to her other than making her a little bit detached and creepy would ruin the effect.

But the youngster does sell the misdirection well: her fury at Henry Shaw before he dies works well and her reaction when Mary Lou punishes Credence one too many times does too.

Ultimately, she's another narrative device, so it's impossible to really get attached to her, but she definitely wouldn't feel out of place in a horror film.
