Fifty Shades Of Grey Review: 14 Hilariously Awful Moments

14. Rain As A Sexual Metaphor

The movie begins, of course, with Anastasia Steele (Johnson) meeting Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan) for the first time at his office, asking him various questions about himself and his business for an assignment. After they have an intense and frank conversation in which Christian makes his attraction to her pretty obvious, Anastasia ventures outside and takes a moment to catch her breath in the pouring rain. It's a blatantly obvious metaphor for Anastasia being sexually aroused and, indeed, wet, all the more obvious because when the scene cuts to Christian getting in his car (presumably mere minutes later), there's no rain to speak of. At least this scene indicates early on that Taylor-Johnson is having a little playful fun with the inherent silliness of her movie.
