Friday The 13th Series: Jason's 10 Best Kills

Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood isn't necessarily one of the best of the series. It had reportedly been conceived as the original Freddy Vs Jason, but Paramount were unable to secure the rights to the Nightmare on Elm Street villain from New Line Cinema, a hasty rewrite was called for. As a result, we have what essentially amounts to Jason Vs Carrie, as Tina (Lar Park-Lincoln), a troubled teen with telekinetic ability, comes out to Crystal Lake and inadvertently awakens the hockey mask-wearing killer with her untamed power.

Still, The New Blood is a landmark film in the Friday the 13th series for two key reasons. Firstly, it was the series debut of Kane Hodder, who remains the best-loved Jason actor, having gone on to portray the killer in the next three movies before being controversially replaced on Freddy Vs Jason. Secondly, it features one of the absolute classic kills of the series: the sleeping bag death.

It's beautiful in its morbid simplicity. Finding Judy (Debora Kessler) in her sleeping bag, Jason scoops her up like a sack of potatoes, and bashes her against a tree. Just how many times he bashes her may vary according to which cut you're watching; as shot, he kept going until she was a bloody pulp, but this fell afoul of censors in some areas.

Hodder got to reprise the moment in Jason X, bashing two mostly naked campers into one another; then Derek Mears got in on the act in the 2009 reboot, although this was an altogether more mean-spirited and sadistic moment, with America Olivo hung in her sleeping bag over a fire and slowly roasted to death.
