To the casual eye Ghost In The Shell might look like a typical anime series, with a hot chick firing machine guns in a futuristic setting. Fans will know there’s more to it than that, with the movies and television show providing much food for thought.

Woven throughout the action-packed stories is a thoughtful commentary on politics, nationality and what it means to be human in a technologic world. The reason the anime has lasted so long is because of these themes, and it appears the live action version has taken this onboard.

Johansson’s Major carries the same feelings of isolation she had in the source material, and it looks like the story will dive into these discussions between explosions. Hopefully, it’ll bring something fresh to the table too since the anime already tread this ground quite expertly.
