Ghost In The Shell: 10 Big Talking Points From The Trailer
5. The Director Is Hardly A Visionary
One potential cause for concern with Ghost In The Shell is that the director – Rupert Sanders – is hardly a filmmaker with a distinct voice. His other feature-length directing credit is Snow White And The Huntsman, which was full of pretty visuals and camerawork, but the rest was utterly forgettable.
Only Charlize Theron made an impression because she was freely hamming it up in style, and despite being a hit it left such little impact the eventual sequel only grossed half as much. It’s obvious from the trailer Sanders has a lot of love for the anime and how it looks, but that alone doesn’t guarantee it’ll be any good.
If Sanders last movie is anything to go by, he might be from the Len Wiseman / Brett Ratner school of directors; they can make it look fantastic, but the characters and story will be pancake flat. GITS deserves better, so let's hope that isn't the case.
