This was by far the biggest shock on the Film side of the awards, with Aaron Taylor-Johnson winning Best Supporting Actor - Drama for his turn in Tom Ford's Nocturnal Animals.

It may have been that the HFPA wanted to find a way to reward the movie, and this was the only category they could do it in, or they just wanted to spring a surprise (or maybe they genuinely did think it was the best), but it's hard to feel like it's really deserved.

Mahershala Ali has been sweeping up awards for his performance in Moonlight, and was expected to win another one here. He was the deserving winner, and the best alternative would've been Jeff Bridges, a beloved veteran who gives a superb supporting performance in Hell Or High Water (a movie that went unrecognised on the night), rather than Taylor-Johnson.
