Harry Potter: 10 Best Characters Who Aren’t Witches Or Wizards

8. Hedwig

Hedwig plays a vital role in the series by delivering and receiving letters to and from her master’s correspondents.

This snowy-white owl first makes an appearance back in The Philosopher’s Stone. Whilst in Diagon Alley, Hagrid buys Hedwig for Harry as a birthday present. Harry, of course, is delighted and can’t stop thanking Hagrid for his new pet.

Despite not having any dialogue, Rowling manages to give Hedwig a distinctive personality. Though she’s loyal to Harry, she’s also slightly vain, and there are several instances when she appears to look down upon other owls.

Hedwig tragically meets her end at the start of The Deathly Hallows when Harry attempts to leave Privet Drive. It seems harsh to kill such a beautiful creature, but Rowling has stated that Hedwig’s death represents Harry’s loss of innocence shortly before he turns 17 – the age wizards and witches officially become adults.
