Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows: 12 HUGE Changes To The Battle Of Hogwarts

10. The Fate Of Lavender Brown

The Harry Potter Wiki will have you believe Lavender Brown's onscreen death is canonical to the events of the books, but don't be fooled. Her fate is incredibly hazy in the book.

The events that set up her confusing fate in both the film and novel are largely the same: Lavender is attacked by the werewolf Fenrir Greyback, and is attacked by Hermione in an attempt to save her life. In the film, the camera very clearly zooms in on a dead Lavender, with her eyes unblinking and her body still. The book however describes how Lavender is "feebly stirring" moments before Hermione blasts Greyback away from her, indicating that she perhaps did not die of her injuries - or, at least not immediately as the film shows.

The film adds an extra scene to emphasise Lavender's death, as Professor Trelawney and the Patil twins are shown covering a dead body with a sheet presumed to be Lavender, with Trelawney sadly stating: "she's gone".

The debate gets even more confusing when looking at old evidence from Pottermore, as her official status was written as "presumed dead", before later being removed to show no status at all. If the official Harry Potter companion site can't make up its mind and J.K. Rowling has never commented on the debate, it's hard to say if we'll ever know what Lavender's fate was intended to be in the book.
