Hobbs & Shaw Trailer Reaction: 6 Ups & 3 Downs
3. The Self-Aware Tone Is PERFECT
The Fast & Furious movies have become increasingly aware of their own absurdity in recent years, culminating in the (in)famous sequence in The Fate of the Furious where Deckard Shaw rescues a baby from a plane while fending off a fleet of attackers.
And while a lot of movies seem desperate and disingenuous when they wink at the audience too much, this franchise has towed the line perfectly, in cheekily nudging the audience's ribs yet not in a way that's trying too hard to be clever.
And Hobbs & Shaw looks set to carry on that tradition, as evidenced by an opening quip where Elba's Brixton refers to himself simply as "bad guy", and later on we hear Hobbs moan about Brixton launching into a "bad guy speech."
There was never any worry that this film would try to get too serious, but even so, it's great to see the film fully leaning into its silliness and just having a ton of fun with it.
In that respect, Leitch was once again a great directorial choice, being fresh off the ultra-meta Deadpool 2 and all.
