How Avengers: Endgame Was Almost Completely Different
5. The Snap Wasn't Supposed To Happen In Infinity War
That's right - the defining moment of Infinity War and the ending that broke comic book movie nerds the world over wasn't actually originally written as such, since the screenwriters were unsure about where to drop their 'oh snap' moment. We could have had two very different movies, had one of the earlier drafts been chosen.
McFeely previously spoke to Empire to say that "We had so much story in those early drafts of Infinity War that, if anything, we thought we maybe shouldn’t do The Snap until the end of act one of Endgame." It's a crazy idea, and one that would fundamentally change the way these films work. We would have gotten more narrative build-up, yes, but at what cost? Infinity War wouldn't pack half the punch it does without sticking its neck out for that mind-blowing ending, and Endgame functions so well as it's a movie that came with that difficult wait where we didn't know what could possibly undo the traumatising finish.
Kevin Feige commented on the choice, saying: "We talked about that ending for years and years and years. It was the reason to adapt Infinity Gauntlet... What was the most shocking thing we could do? End the movie with The Snap."
Thank god they all saw sense.
