Independence Day: 10 Easter Eggs You Didn't Notice

6. "Good Morning, Dave..."

Hal 900020th Century FoxAnother somewhat obvious easter egg/reference for dedicated film buffs, perhaps, but one that might have flew over the heads of some audiences members regardless. So think back to the scene where Jeff Goldblum is aboard the alien spaceship and is getting ready to upload the virus. As he opens up his laptop, a red camera interface appears and a voice says, "Good Morning, Dave." Sound familiar? If it doesn't, you really need to consider your life choices. This is, of course, a reference to Stanley Kubrick's seminal sci-fi movie 2001: A Space Odyssey. The red camera interface and the voice are that of HAL 9000, the devious on-board computer who causes trouble for the similarly named protagonist, Dave. Being a massive geek, then, it's entirely possible that Goldblum's David Levinson would set himself up with such a welcome message, but this was also a nice way for Emmerich to pay Kubrick a little homage. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ump4HEWnrEk
