Jojo Rabbit Review: 7 Ups & 2 Downs

2. The Excellent Musical Choices

True to form, Waititi makes some fantastic musical choices throughout his film.

This is evident from the first minute of Jojo Rabbit alone, where the filmmaker makes the hilarious decision to cut a montage of Hitler's adoring fans to a German cover of The Beatles' pop classic "I Want to Hold Your Hand."

David Bowie's "Heroes" has meanwhile been featured extensively in the film's marketing campaign and is also used to fantastic dramatic effect later in the film itself.

But just as diverting is a unique score from Michael Giacchino, whose work here couldn't be further from the operatic sweep of his dozens of blockbuster scores.

Whether its joyous tone is played straight or juxtaposed against on-screen horror, it's one of the composer's most memorable releases in quite some time.
