Joker Trailer Review: 9 Ups & 1 Down
6. The Unwavering Focus On Arthur Fleck
There are lots of elements to this story and they're all pretty well hinted at in this trailer, but you emerge from it without any doubts over who it's about thanks to the decision to tighten on Phoenix's Arthur Flack all the way through.
Even with the temptation to big up the other moving parts - of Brett Cullen's Thomas Wayne, Robert De Niro's Murray Franklin, Frances Conroy's Penny Fleck, Zazie Beetz's Sophie Dumond or Marc Maron's Ted Marco - as any other trailer for a project THIS controversial would do. Because bear in mind, this film is no swing for the fences for Warner Bros, it's a bold choice and not putting out all of their wares so blatantly is as brave a move as it is a rewarding one for the watch experience of this trailer.
That decision also reinforces how much of a character study this is going to be - how much we're going to get under the skin of the Joker for the first time. And that in itself is probably the biggest selling point for fans of the character on film.
