Justice League Vs The Fatal Five: Everything We Know About The JL Reunion

2. A Focus On Mental Health

Adding Jessica Cruz to the roster brings an unseen wrinkle to the common superhero story. Jessica Cruz in the comics is a character who, when first introduced, had serious anxiety issues.

As a matter fact, Jessica's anxiety was so bad she found herself more often than not locking herself in the closet, afraid of the unknown. It was only through her friends in the Justice League, and a serious look at mental health as a whole, that Jessica was able to accept and treat her anxiety.

The producers of the film have hinted that those themes of mental health will be addressed in this film through Jessica and Legionnaire Starboy, who has a condition that requires him to be medicated.

This new focus on mental health is nothing new for DC. Writer Tom King has used his experiences in the CIA to craft stories like Heroes in Crisis, or 2018's Mister Miracle, both dealing with the effects of trauma and the importance of dealing with unresolved pain.

Comic books and the characters in them have always tackled social issues, using their stories as allegories for challenges we face in society. This film is another step in the right direction, and continues the mature approach to storytelling the DCAU championed during its peak.
