The deal is done. After nearly a
month's worth of talks,
The Hollywood Reporter has broke the news that
Kevin Costner is now officially attached to play Jonathan Kent in the June shooting
Superman: The Man of Steel. Jonathan, or sometimes Pa Kent, is the adopted father of Clark, played in the new film by relatively unknown British actor
Henry Cavill - and it's about as perfect a casting as you are gonna get. Diane Lane was announced as
Martha Kent two weeks ago. Warner Brothers issued a statement shortly after the story broke, confirming the news....
"Jonathan Kent is the only father figure Clark has ever had, the man who was there to help Clark understand what he was meant to do in the world as Superman. Kevin will be able to communicate the quiet strength of this rural American man who raised the greatest superhero of all time."
The extent of Pa Kent's role in the new film is not yet known, or whether even the character will suffer the same fate that Glenn Ford's portrayal did in Richard Donner's 1978 version. Though with the film rumoured to mostly cover Smallville-era Superman, and with their casting coming 2nd and 3rd, one would presume The Kent's will have a huge role in this. Casting wise... we know Snyder wants
Viggo Mortensen to play the villain General Zod (though he's attached to Snow White and The Huntsmen which looks to take precedence), and that's there a role for his
villainess sidekick Ursa (three names linked) but we've heard nothing in the way of Lois Lane, Perry White or Jimmy Olsen outside of wild speculation. Superman: The Man of Steel opens December 2012.
