Logan Reviews: 11 Early Critical Reactions
10. Jackman & Stewart Give Their Best Performances In The Series
"This is easily Jackman's greatest performance as Wolverine, allowing him to delve deeper into the persona than any previous film. He not only brings the usual cynicism, anger, and regret, but also a wonderfully confused mix of compassion, exhaustion, and bitterness in his complex relationship with Charles Xavier." - Forbes
"As for Stewart, he’s clearly having a blast playing this version of Professor X. No longer constrained to playing the wise old mentor, this Professor X is bitter, angry, and unafraid to swear his head off." - Collider
The words "fitting swan song" have been used in a high number of the film's reviews so far, and the easy consensus is that both Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart get to give their best performances as Logan and Xavier to date.
Unshackled by the needs of an entry into a distinct, lineal franchise, the two are able to elevate their characters to previously unseen heights, and the pair, by most accounts the two best actors in the entire X-Men series, don't merely lean back on the movie's novel, R-rated dystopian qualities.
This was their chance to take things to a new level, and it sure sounds like they seized it.
