Logan Reviews: 11 Early Critical Reactions
6. It's Got Real Emotional Depth
"The themes are weighty: loss, ageing and deep, almost unbearable regret." - Time Out
"It pierces the heart several times over and leaves you in pieces...Do bring your hankies." - Digital Spy
There's so often a disparity between R-rated superhero movies being mature and "mature". A film can be graphically violent and feature sailor-like swearing, but that doesn't mean its characters and ideas aren't juvenile. Deadpool, for instance, willingly indulges in such behaviour to hilarious effect.
Logan, though, brings the emotional resonance to match the rating, with deeply existential themes and a nuanced exploration of Logan as a character that often takes precedent over all the blood-letting.
Hearing that the film has an emotional payoff from so many critics is sure to only heighten intrigue ahead of the movie's release: could this mean Fox actually had the balls to kill Wolverine on-screen, or is there something else we haven't even considered?
Some reviewers also noted the film's intriguing meta quality, that it readily comments on the mythic quality of superhero movies today, and in light of the X-Men franchise's own recent blandness in particular, that's very much welcome.
