The praise wasn't relentless without concession, though, and one of the most commonly called-out criticisms is the disappointingly scant role afforded to the legendary Richard E. Grant as villainous scientist Xander Rice.

Considering his seemingly pivotal role in X-23's creation, many critics were left underwhelmed at the rather piecemeal nature of his part, even if a solid amount of praise was still leveled at the film's central villain, Donald Pierce (played by the brilliant Boyd Holbrook).
