The Lord of the Rings movies got through an astounding amount of prosthetics, but it's unsurprising considering all the fantastical creatures running around on screen. The process of applying the more complex prosthetics would take hours at a time, and John Rhys-Davies would often fall asleep while he was being transformed into Gimli.

You'd think the hobbit actors would have a far easier time of it, after all, they only had to slip on a pair of hairy hobbit hobbit-feet and some pointy ears... But it turned out to be an extremely tedious experience.

The make up team needed to attach the feet with glue, wait for it to dry, and then hairbrush the seams to adequately hide them. This whole process took several hours, and the hobbits were required to stand up for the entire time due to the way their ankles bent when they sat. Considering this process started at 4 or 5 in the morning, it wasn't the most relaxing way to wake up.

Sean Astin kept a running tally of all the days he had his feet glued on, without them being captured on film. At the end of the shoot he informed Peter Jackson he had needlessly gone through the ordeal for a total 50 days, out of roughly 300. It's tough being an actor...
