Lord Of The Rings: 10 Things You Didn't Know About The Elves

1. The Elves Never Went To Helm's Deep

The Battle of Helm's Deep has gone down as one of the greatest battle sequences ever put to the big screen. Peter Jackson did a remarkable job of bringing a pivotal and iconic moment in Tolkien's tale to life. But he took some MASSIVE liberties.

Jackson painted the Rohirrim as a people unprepared for war and on the verge of utter destruction at the hands of Saruman. If it wasn't for the addition of the elves the Uruk-hai would have wiped the floor with all those stable boys and old men.

But this wasn't the way Tolkien originally intended things. After Gandalf releases Théoden from the enchantment of Saruman, the King musters a host to ride out and join his forces already doing battle. He soon learns of a terrible defeat, however, and instead leads his men to reinforce the fortress of Helm's Deep, setting in for a long siege.

In this version, Éomer is also at the fortress and along with Aragorn leads the defence. In stark contrast to all the boys and old men in the movie, they have almost three thousand, seasoned warriors.

We'll hand it to Jackson, the elves did look cool though...
