Man Utd Transfers: 11 Signings Louis Van Gaal Must Make Immediately

9. Luke Shaw

Current Club: Southampton Given United's well publicised flirtation with Everton's England full-back Leighton Baines in the summer, it seems likely that the club will once again look to strengthen their options at left back this summer. Hotly linked target Fabio Coentrao looks set to stay in Real Madrid according to the latest updates, and Baines may be judged a too costly alternative at his age - and that's assuming that he would be happy to move to a club who are not yet assured of finishing in a European position in the league. The other alternative then is Luke Shaw, the Southampton youngster who has enjoyed a break-out couple of seasons as the latest prodigy to come out of the Saints' exceptional youth facilities. According to Jason Burt at the Telegraph, Shaw's signing has been made more likely by Chelsea's expected deal to sign Filipe from Atletico Madrid, with the expected planned bid for the 18 year old likely to be £27 million. United had scouted Filipe as an alternative to Patrice Evra, but with his move to London looking close, it paves the way for a move for Shaw. For their money, United would be assured of a player with his career in front of him, who has excelled for Southampton this season, not only in his defending role, but also joining in the attack, and who is surely destined to make the England left-back berth his own for the next decade and beyond. As indication that they may be expecting Shaw to leave, Southampton have been linked with a £6m move for Nice€™s brilliant young left back Timothée Kolodziejczak.
