Marvel Cinematic Universe: Every Upcoming Film Ranked By Anticipation
3. Captain Marvel
Release Date: March 8, 2019
Over the years, the MCU has given rise to a slew of great and popular female characters, from Black Widow, Scarlet Witch, Pepper Potts, and Gamora on the big screen to Jessica Jones, Quake, Melinda May, Claire Temple, and Peggy Carter on the small screen, with many more set for bigger futures down the line like Luke Cage's Misty Knight and Ant-Man's Hope van Dyne. In terms of headliners, though, only Peggy Carter and Jessica Jones have led their own projects, which makes the impending arrival of Marvel's first female-led film something of importance.
The character of Carol Danvers has been one whose arrival into the MCU has been teased for years off-screen, but despite her solo outing being slated for a release date along with all the other films, it was the one whose details have been most shrouded in mystery. When the casting of Brie Larson in the role was finally announced this summer, the announcement was met with open arms by fans, a huge relief considering how big a deal the character is going to inevitably become both in the MCU and pop culture at large.
With no director announced yet, no additional casting revealed, and no story details unveiled about the film, it's anyone's guess how her story will play out. Unlike some of the other films on this list, the lack of details about the film oddly work in its favor in stoking the flames of anticipation, because her story is the last step before everything the MCU has been building towards since 2008 comes to a head in Avengers 4 just two months later.
This makes it pretty clear that Marvel has some major plans for her, as she's the perfect candidate to lead the Avengers in a post-Thanos world headed into Phase 4 and beyond.
