Regardless of how you feel about the rest of the movie and the apparent need for escalation in all blockbuster action movies, there's no getting around the fact that Loki's Chitauri invasion is tacked on for the sake of manufacturing greater thrills.

As a result, the Chitauri are a completely disposable race who are dropped in as cannon fodder and who are absolutely impossible to care about. And then it's hard to care about anything that is so flippantly treated by the film's own script.

At one point The Other says "The Chitauri grow restless" - how, exactly? They're robots, possibly, since they simply cease to work when the mothership is destroyed. And why wasn't this ever explored: seriously, what even are they?
