5. The Runaways
Song: Cherry Bomb Film: Guardians Of The Galaxy This all-American, all-female rock band were never actually a huge hit in the States, but became an overseas sensation with their hit song Cherry Bomb, at one stage being the fourth most imported artist in Japan after ABBA, Kiss and Led Zeppelin. Formed in 1975 by drummer Sandy West and rhythm guitarist Joan Jett (who would later go on to find success with The Blackhearts), the band split in 1979 after a disagreement over musical direction. As well as featuring in the movie proper, Cherry Bomb was used in the TV sports for Guardians of the Galaxy, as it was considered what director James Gunn called a cultural reference point that reminded the viewer that, while the bulk of the film is set in outer space, our lead hero is as human as you and me. Or so we think.
