10. Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol 2 (2017)

There were lots of accusations that James Gunn's follow-up to the original Guardians Of The Galaxy was a little too in love with itself to be a truly great movie, but the sequel is just as infectious as its predecessor.

Having made such a success of the original, Gunn was freed to make the sequel he wanted and the result is a weirder, wilder affair with just as much comedy (in fact, a good dollop more) and a swagger that is impossible to react. And under all of that cockiness there's a story with real heart that culminates in probably the most devastating moments in the MCU when Yondu sacrifices himself.

Kurt Russell's Ego is a good addition as the villain, the commitment to spectacle is just right and Gunn is clearly invested in advancing his characters and not just making everything brighter and bigger. The way he progresses Star-Lord, Yondu, Nebula and Gamora in particular should be taught in Characterisation 101.
