When it comes to the popularity of its characters, Spider-Man has long been to Marvel what Batman has been to DC. Though 1998's Blade and 2000's X-Men paved the way for the resurgence of comic book films after 1997's Batman & Robin debacle, it wasn't until 2002's Spider-Man arrived that the floodgates were well and truly kicked open, setting off the long road to where we are today.

When Marvel Studios launched the MCU back in 2008, they didn't have the benefit of having the character - or the X-Men - on their side, forcing them to turn to characters like Iron Man and Captain America to lead the charge. As the world has seen, it all paid off, with the MCU's characters becoming household names overnight while Sony only drove Spider-Man into the ground.

Now, though, Spider-Man is being brought into the fold, set to be introduced in next year's Civil War before getting his own solo film in 2017. After three films in a row of poor decision making with the character, a new Spider-Man can be done justice by Marvel, who owe a lot to the character, recognise his popularity and aren't afraid to shy away from everything fans have always loved about him. Some may think it's too soon for "another reboot" of the character, but in reality it's about time for the ol' web-head to get the treatment he deserves.
