Michael Caine: 5 Awesome Performances And 5 That Sucked
From the Italian Job to Miss Congeniality...
No matter how good you are at your job, there will always be a point in your life when you'll look back on your career and think to yourself, "what the hell was I thinking?" Nobody is immune. Not even well-respected, cinematic legends like Michael Caine. If you're ever in the mood for some Caine action and decide look back over his early filmography, you'll find it extremely difficult to find an example of a bad film. The actor has appeared in so many classic British films over the years, that his résumé is a candidate for being almost perfect. If you're a fan of his earlier work, then you'll no doubt already know about his brilliant performances as Lieutenant Gonville Bromhead in Zulu, or as Charlie Croker in the original Italian Job. No stranger to the gritty realism of early British cinema either, Caine is known just as well for his character Jack Carter in Get Carter, a film that personified the darker side of 1970s Britain. But even with so many iconic films under his belt, Caine has never been afraid to branch out. His role in the 2006 film Children Of Men saw him play an ageing hippy stoner that content with a bohemian lifestyle in civilization that no longer cared about society. While Caine's winning streak has continued in recent years with films like Harry Brown and frequent collaborations with Christopher Nolan in the Dark Knight Trilogy and the soon-to-be-released Interstellar, there's bound to be gaps on an otherwise spotless record. Complimentary in nature, but poorly executed, both Get Carter and Sleuth - two of Caine's greatest films - were both subjected to the dreaded remake cycle in the 2000s, and perhaps against his better judgement Caine appeared in both, playing characters different to the ones he originally performed. But remakes aren't the only sub-par films Caine has been a part of. Roles in the awful Jaws 4: The Revenge and Bewitched are arguably even worse than both of the previously mentioned remakes. To celebrate Caine's latest collaboration with director Christopher Nolan, the legendary actor is the latest name to run the gauntlet of our 5 Awesome Performances And 5 That Sucked Friday column...
