Michael Caine: 5 Awesome Performances And 5 That Sucked
5 Awesome Performances...
5. Lieutenant Gonville Bromhead - Zulu (1964)
Michael Caine appeared in numerous films before he was cast in Zulu, but the historical war film was the first where the actor was credited as a member of the main cast and his breakthrough role. Zulu is as classic as classic films get, and other than being Caine's first major part, it still remains as one of his best. If you're still yet to see the film (seriously, you should get on that), the film is a semi-fictional retelling of the events of Rorke's Drift - a supply depot for British forces during their invasion of 'Zululand'. Cut off from the rest of the British army and short on manpower in the face of four-thousand advancing Zulus, Lieutenant Gonville Bromhead and the rest of his battalion fortify their depot for one last stand-off. Caine's character in the film may not be the leading one, but his performance, along with the rest of the cast of Zulu, has contributed to the lasting appeal of the film with the British public. Caine marvellously portrays a tense, fearful yet strong soldier as Bromhead, and watching each on-screen day pass as the inhabitants of Rorke's Drift grow ever more weary of their plight, Caine's charisma as Bromhead helps to bring a sense of relief to both the film's characters and audiences.
