20 Movie Sequels That Took WAY Too Long
19. Tron: Ares
2010's Tron: Legacy concluded with quite the tantalising tease for a third film, as program Quorra (Olivia Wilde) found her way into the real world, seemingly teeing up a threequel where the fantastical world of Tron clashed with our own reality.
But Tron: Legacy was a box office disappointment, barely grossing $400 million worldwide against a hefty $170 million budget.
And so despite the film's sizable cult following, Disney was slow to greenlight Tron 3, with numerous filmmakers becoming attached to the project before ultimately leaving.
It wasn't until the summer of 2023 that cameras finally began rolling on Tron: Ares, a soft reboot to the franchise helmed by Joachim Rønning (Kon-Tiki), yet many were left feeling that it was just too little, too late.
A direct sequel to Tron: Legacy is what most fans wanted - not a quasi-reimagining led by Jared Leto of all people, and one which teased we might return to the story of Tron: Legacy if this one hit at the box office.
Which, predictably, it didn't, ensuring we'll probably be left waiting more than 15 years for a fourth Tron movie.
