Neill Blomkamp’s Alien 5: Everything You Need To Know
6. It Might Totally Tear Up Alien 3 And Alien Resurrection
One possible solution to the film's continuity problems is that Blomkamp might simply pretend that Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection didn't happen. After all, most of the film's fans have been doing that anyway. The suggestion that Alien 5 might well override the story and ignore the established canon brings its own pros and cons though. On the plus side it gives Blomkamp carte blanche to tell his story, and more importantly end it, whichever way he wants. However studios tend to get cold feet over the idea of retcons as it opens up every single franchise that's deemed to be "less than perfect" for a needless retreading of boards. Given Weaver's age in real-life and the fact Alien 3 starts mere moments after Aliens, it's almost impossible to image this film slotting in between the two. Her subsequent death in the film's final act removes the possibility for picking things up afterwards, and Resurrection starred a genetically engineered super-Ripley some 200 years later. Regardless of when it's set, ignoring the last two films makes sense on a number of levels.
