New Avengers: Infinity War Reveals Detail Thanos' Motivations, Thor's Arc

1. Thanos' Motivations

Although Thanos has been typecast as a thoroughly one-dimensional character, one whose sole motivation lies in a macabre obsession with death (Lady Death, specifically), it looks as though Infinity War is opting for a different approach.

With the film taking inspiration from a wide variety of different comics, including Infinity Gauntlet and Jonathan Hickman's Infinity, Joe and Anthony Russo's film is taking a wide variety of different portrayals of the character under consideration. That means that the Mad Titan's earlier appearances should probably be utilised, but so too will his later ones. He's still a villain in the traditional sense of course, but the inspiration for his tyranny doesn't lie squarely with his obsession for death, with this particular bio detailing his concern in "saving the universe from itself."

It wouldn't be inconceivable for Marvel to introduce a twist at this stage, but in providing some ambiguity to what was once considered a fairly unambiguous character, Infinity War could yet have even more surprises waiting in the wings.
