20 Awesome Recent Horror Movies You Definitely Missed
12. Redux Redux
Perhaps no recent genre film has touted a premise as fiercely, attention-grabbingly original as Redux Redux, which follows a bereaved mother (Michaela McManus) who travels through parallel universes and repeatedly kills her daughter's murderer, all while hoping she might actually be alive in one of them.
That's one hell of a heightened, inspired riff on a seemingly played-out revenge film conceit, while also doing something savagely unique with the increasingly tired Multiverse Movie.
The multiversal setup dovetails perfectly into the film's central theme of vengeance's futility, while filmmakers Kevin and Matthew McManus smartly keep the particulars of the universe-hopping vague per their low budget.
But the real coup here is the magnificent central performance from Michaela McManus, who doesn't let the more outlandish narrative elements undermine her genuinely deeply felt portrayal of a mother struggling to accept her child's death.
And yet despite receiving rave reviews from the festival circuit, Redux Redux was listlessly dumped on streaming platforms earlier this year with barely a peep.
