One of the most unique films of any genre released this past year, or really any year, Obex is a mesmerising testament to what talented artists can produce with minimal resources.

Produced by filmmaker Albert Birney for an estimated $15,000, Obex stars Birney as Conor Marsh, a man whose dog Sandy is abducted into a video game called OBEX, sending him on an odyssey into the game itself to save his beloved pet.

Even though the budgetary constraints are obvious, Birney's film is jam-packed with visual invention, fully leaning into its DIY style with gorgeous black-and-white cinematography and rough-hewn retro-style video game imagery.

It's easy to see why such a niche, genre-bending slice of sci-fi fantasy horror hasn't broken out, but if you're a fan of either retro video games or no-budget filmmaking of any kind, you owe it to yourself to get immersed in the hypnotic world of Obex.
