New Regency dump VOLTRON

Relativity Media soon pick up rights, but it won't be as epic.

New Regency, a subsidiary of 20th Century Fox have announced that they are shelving their Voltron project, the big money adaptation of the popular Japanese animated TV series of the 1980s. However with the success of the $708 million worldwide hit Transformers, it was never going to be long until a new studio backed the robot battle project and Variety report that Relativity Media are in talks to take over the series, though their proposed version won't be as epic. They plan to use the cost-effective green screen technology WB used on 300.

Justin Mark's script will still be used. His script for Street Fighter is his only written work to have advanced into filming with He-Man, Super Max and Hack/Slash still in the development stages.

Marks' take is described as a post-apocalyptic tale set in New York City and Mexico, where five survivors of an alien attack band together and end up piloting the five lion-shaped robots that combine and form the massive sword-wielding Voltron that helps battle Earth's invaders.

Never seen Voltron, just like I hadn't really ever seen Transformers in the run up to that movie. Moderate budget seems sensible and green screen technology would instantly help differnate between this project and Michael Bay's.
