One Mind Blowing Secret From Every MCU Movie
15. Mysterio Was Almost A Skrull - Spider-Man: Far From Home
For anyone going into Spider-Man: Far From Home not knowing a thing about the comics and the characters, the Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) rug pull was executed to perfection. Introduced initially as a new ally from an alternate dimension, Quentin Beck's true nature was soon shown.
However, anyone who was aware of the character knew from the start that Mysterio was a villain, and the Master of Illusions to boot, and that the heel turn was coming. Far From Home wasn't about to repeat the subversion of expectations Captain Marvel so gracefully pulled off with the Skrulls.
There was a very early idea thrown around by screenwriters Erik Sommers and Chris McKenna that would have borrowed heavily from the Brie Larson-led Captain Marvel, and genuinely shocked audiences. This would have been the reveal that Mysterio was, in fact, a Skrull.
The writers have admitted that proceedings didn't get too far before this idea was taken off the table, with the shapeshifters still ultimately being represented by Nick Fury and Maria Hill (Samuel L. Jackson and Cobie Smulders), and while it may not have wound up as compelling a story as that of Quentin Beck and Peter Parker, predictable though it may have been, it would have been a fun and unexpected turn. As a reveal, though, it may have landed closer to the Mandarin than the Skrulls.
