Oscar Nominations 2021: 7 Ups & 8 Downs
4. Sound Of Metal Receives Six Nominations
Considering it premiered at TIFF back in September 2019 to a solid critical reception and wasn't released by Amazon until over a year later, few would've been surprised if Sound of Metal came and went without making a dent in the grander Oscar picture.
But a surge of critical acclaim late last year has allowed its momentum to build and build, even if many still doubted its chances to receive substantial Oscar nominations.
And so, it's a tremendous joy to see the superb drama receive six nods, for Best Picture, Best Actor (Riz Ahmed), Best Supporting Actor (Paul Raci), Best Original Screenplay, Best Film Editing, and Best Sound.
Raci in particular seemed like he might end up getting snubbed, but the Academy ultimately rallied to support one of the most affecting and original dramas of the last year.
