Oscars 2017: Who Should Win Every Award (And Who Actually Will)

16. Performance By An Actress In A Supporting Role

Oscars Casey Affleck Denzel Washington
Paramount

Nominees: Viola Davis (Fences), Naomie Harris (Moonlight), Nicole Kidman (Lion), Octavia Spencer (Hidden Figures), Michelle Williams (Manchester By the Sea)

Who Should Win

Viola Davis.

Technically speaking Davis shouldn't be here, because hers is very much a leading role. But she's entered the Supporting race to give her a better chance of winning, and thus deserves to do exactly that. It's a tour-de-force performance, one of the strongest of all acting nominees; a quiet spark that ignites into a raging fire, that should turn into gold.

Who Will Win

Viola Davis.

This should be the safest bet of all the acting categories, although Naomie Harris and Michelle Williams both give worthy (and actual supporting) performances. Davis has been winning everything, she won the Tony for this same role, and she is genuinely exceptional.
