Oscars 2019: Predicting All The Nominees

And at last, we come to the biggie, where half the battle - in terms of guessing the nominations - is predicting not what will get the votes, but how many films will be recognised here. Since the expansion of this field, the full ten has been selected twice, the same number of times for eight movies, and 9 films have been thrown up five times. Looking at the contenders though, and it might struggle to make quite so many this year - there's a very solid, safe handful, and then a few that could go either way, meaning we could be looking at an 8, if not perhaps even a 7.

There are those that are almost certainly going to be nominated, based on awards season trends: Roma and A Star Is Born were the two frontrunners, and but Green Book's PGA victory puts it at the top now. BlackKklansman, Black Panther, and The Favourite all in the mix too. After that, things start to get a little trickier. The Producers Guild nominated those six, plus Bohemian Rhapsody, A Quiet Place, Vice, and Crazy Rich Asians. Bohemian Rhapsody also had a shock win at the Golden Globes, and has a SAG nomination for Outstanding Performance By A Cast, all of which suggests it's (somewhat surprisingly) firmly in contention now.

Crazy Rich Asians also has a SAG Cast nomination to go with its PGA nod, but it feels oddly out of place because it isn't being talked about for many other awards, which will likely cost it, and that goes double for A Quiet Place (which doesn't have SAG, but was on AFI's Best of 2018 list). Vice will likely get in on the back of its performances and the Academy's love of Adam McKay. After that, If Beale Street Could Talk, Mary Poppins Returns, and First Man are all hovering with a chance of a nomination, but none are anywhere close to being sure things. If it goes to town, then Beale Street is best placed of those, but otherwise it'll likely look like this...
