Oscars 2020: 15 Insanely Early Predictions For Next Year's Academy Awards

13. Best Original Score: John Williams - Star Wars Episode IX

Star Wars Episode IX
Lucasfilm

Other Nominees: Thomas Newman (Tolkien), John Powell (How To Train Your Dragon 3), Max Richter (Ad Astra), Hans Zimmer (The Lion King),

This is one of the hardest to predict with regards to nominees, since there's less to go on than with other categories in terms of looking ahead. It's unclear if Zimmer's score will be eligible, depending on how much he reuses of the original, and it's yet to be revealed who'll score The Irishman or Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. This mix of perennial contenders, and Richter as Ad Astra is likely to be technically excellent, feels like the kind of people the Academy will go for though.

Still, John Williams is John Williams. He's been nominated for both of the Sequel Trilogy's films so far, so it seems very likely he'll get another nomination for Star Wars Episode IX. On top of that, though, is this is Williams' last Star Wars film. Which means it's the Oscars' last chance to recognise the legend for his most famous work - something they've not actually done since the original way back in 1977. It's likely the score he delivers here will be quite an emotional piece of work, but it's the narrative around it that suggests Williams will take the prize yet again.
