Oscars 2020: 15 Insanely Early Predictions For Next Year's Academy Awards

12. Best Film Editing: Michael McCusker - Ford Vs Ferrari

James Mangold Logan
Fox

Other Nominees: Maryann Brandon & Stefan Grube (Star Wars Episode IX), John Axelrad & Lee Haugen (Ad Astra), Kelley Dixon (The Goldfinch), Thelma Schoonmaker (The Irishman)

Again, this far out it's a little tricky to predict - some editors haven't been announced - but we can look at past form and general hype to determine who the nominees will be. Schoonmaker is a legend and The Irishman will be in the Best Picture race, so she should be a look. Likewise, The Goldfinch is a big contender, and Dixon is graduating from great (and flashy) work on the likes of Breaking Bad and Beter Call Saul. Ad Astra looks technically brilliant, and Brandon scored a nomination (alongside Mary Jo Markey) for The Force Awakens. Other films to keep an eye on here include Rocketman (after Bohemian Rhapsody's win), and Once Upon A Time In Hollywood.

Often, though, this award goes to films with a LOT of editing, and Ford v Ferrari should fit the brief there. Given how much of it is centred around motor racing, we can expect lots of flashy edits and cross-cutting, alongside a zippy pace, which should catch the eye of Academy members. Ford v Ferrari is likely to be a decent contender, if not a frontrunner, and James Mangold is a superb director who has had films play well with the Academy before. It might not quite make it into the Best Picture race, but could find itself compensated here.
