Oscars 2021 Results: All The Major Winners (And Who Should Have Really Won)

6. Best Supporting Actress - Youn Yuh-jung

Nomadland 2021
A24

Minari not only beautifully examined and dissected the idea of the American Dream, but it also introduced the Western world to veteran South Korean actress Youn Yuh-jung. An absolute masterclass in acceptance speeches, Yuh-jung began by addressing the famous A-Lister presenting her award with "Mr Pitt, nice to finally meet you". She forgave audiences for mispronouncing her name, paid homage to her fellow nominee Glenn Close and said to her two children watching from Korea: "this is the result because mummy worked so hard." Legend.

Predicted winner: Youn Yuh-jung - Minari

Youn Yuh-jung had a shaky start across the awards ceremonies, having not even been nominated at the Golden Globes and losing to Borat Subsequent Moviefilm's Maria Bakalova at the Critics' Choice Awards. However, Yuh-jung slowly built momentum and won at the Screen Actors Guild Awards and the Baftas which (thankfully) cemented this prediction from January.

Rightful winner: Youn Yuh-jung - Minari

It is incredibly refreshing to see the Academy recognise a more comedic performance for Best Supporting Actress, having last done so four years ago with Allison Janney's performance in I, Tonya. Likewise, Yuh-jung managed to balance the comedic sensibilities of her character with a beating heart which was allowed to shine when interacting with her onscreen grandson, David.
